Beware of fake medical doctors

THE South African Medical Association (Sama) has warned the public to be on the lookout for bogus doctors who are mushrooming across the country.

THE South African Medical Association (Sama) has warned the public to be on the lookout for bogus doctors who are mushrooming across the country.

The association says hundreds of people are masquerading as doctors.

The bogus healthcare practitioners range from paediatricians and neurologists to backstreet aborti-onists who operate under the most dismal and unhygienic conditions.

Sama chairperson Denise White said: "We have been aware for some time of their existence but there is nothing we can do because we do not have any jurisdiction over them.

"The best advice to the public is to check their qualifications and if they are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa."

The warning comes a day after the HPCSA deregistered 12800 medicos from its list after they failed to pay their annual registration fees.

HPCSA registrar Boyce Mkhize said: "We are concerned by the flood of advertisements by people claiming to be doctors and experts in pregnancy termination. We have warned the public to avoid such individuals.

"The countless advertisements plastered on street poles and buildings is a clear indication that these people are not registered with the HPCSA," Mkhize said.
