I REALLY love Redi Direko, her column, radio show and her approach to pressing matters. Last week she didn't disappoint in her column about the BRT system.

It's true that taxi operators act as if our roads belong to them. Their unruly behaviour attests to that.

As a taxi commuter I don't know how the BRT system will benefit me. In practice, buses operate according to a timetable, while I am allowed to catch a taxi at a time that suits me and my mood. Will the BRT buses operate like taxis do - no time schedule?

Will the drivers allow me to board when I have a shortfall in my bus fare, like taxi drivers do around Tshwane and in rural areas? I know for a fact that the Noord taxi drivers will not allow you to use their taxis if one has a shortfall in the taxi fare.

While I'm not totally against the BRT system, I know that change is not easy to adapt to as Redi has rightly pointed out.

Another point is that taxi drivers do indeed get violent and that must come to an immediate end for the sake of commuters.

Taxi owners need to pay tax like the rest of us.

The government must come up with a solution that will satisfy all the parties - the government, taxi owners and drivers as well as commuters.

The government must conduct a needs analysis on commuters to find out how they feel about the BRT system because it affects them.
