THE DA says it is "outrageous" that the wife of former head of Gauteng Shared Services Mike Maile was awarded a R3,6million tender.

Maile is one of ANC chairperson Paul Mashatile's allies - commonly known as the "Alex Mafia".

The contract was awarded in December last year to Daisy Maile for road repairs.

"This is outrageous. It is a blatant conflict of interest as favouritism cannot be ruled out because of the role played by GSSC in awarding the tender," DA MPL Jack Bloom said yesterday.

"I doubt that Mrs Maile has any real expertise in road maintenance. Mrs Maile was awarded a two-year contract at R149000 a month as part of a scheme for emerging contractors where material and expertise were provided by the department."

But Maile said it was a shame that despite the years Bloom had spent in the legislature he did not seem to be aware that GSSC does not award tenders related to infrastructure.

"Infrastructure tenders are handled by housing and public works. GSSC has no input into who gets the tender."

Maile also said he had declared his wife's business interests.
