KENNETH Nkosi, who is currently enjoying the limelight with fellow actor Rapulana Seiphemo in White Wedding, has just achieved another feat.

He is one of the lead actors in a new feature movie, District 9, which premiered to huge acclaim in the US last week.

Shot in Soweto last year the movie is about the presence of alien visitors in Jozi and in it Nkosi is heard shouting encouragement to his combatants: "Shoot the young bastard."

The sci-fi film is expected to lure huge crowds when it comes to South Africa later this month, after drawing throngs of fans to previews at last month's Comic-Con pop culture convention in the US.

The movie, which is about aliens who possess powerful weapons that humans want to control, was co-written and directed by South African-born Neill Blomkamp and produced by Oscar-winning Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson.

The producers have confirmed that on its first screening weekend in the US it grossed $37million (about R302million).

The storyline goes like this: 20 years ago an enormous spaceship rested over Joburg, now a sun-scorched urban wasteland. Since then, the ship's inhabitants have been moved into the titular ghetto and placed under the control of Multi-National United, a private corporation bent on cracking the secrets of the aliens' ultra-powerful weapons.

District 9 also stars Sharlto Copley as Wikus van der Merwe, Vanessa Haywood, Mandla Gaduka, Eugene Khumbanyiwa, Jason Cope, David James, Louis Minnaar and Sylvaine Strike. The movie will hit South Africa's big screens from August 28.

After cutting his teeth as a visual effects artist and director of music videos and commercials, Blomkamp makes his feature film directorial debut with District 9, drawing inspiration from classic science fiction films as well as the Johannesburg of his youth.

He was born and raised here before emigrating to Canada. The result is a film that breaks ground with a new, thrilling voice.
