Who will promote Funeka-Guzman?

MZIMASE Mnguni said yesterday that his American counterpart Gary Shaw had begun negotiating with Oscar de la Hoya's Golden Boy Promotions over the promotional rights for the IBF lightweight title fight between Ali Funeka and Joan Guzman. The title is vacant.

Mnguni, the accomplished manager who co-promotes Funeka with Shaw and Cedric Kushner, said the IBF advised the two camps on August 4 that they must have reached an agreement before September 4 or else the rights to promote this alluring fight will be decided through a purse bid.

Funeka from Mdantsane in Eastern Cape is rated third, a spot above Guzman from Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.

Both the number one and two IBF lightweight spots are vacant. The clash has been approved by the IBF's championship committee.

"There is a possibility that it will take place in November but still there are lots of ifs and whens," Mnguni said.

"Gary is negotiating with Golden Boy Promotions. In the event Shaw wins the bid, obviously he will be looking for what is good for his business and Ali, so doing the fight here cannot be ruled out. Money dictates terms."
