Zuma wants positive action

SERVICE delivery protests in Mpumalanga, North West, Western Cape and Gauteng are expected to take centre stage when President Jacob Zuma meets premiers and mayors in Pretoria today.

SERVICE delivery protests in Mpumalanga, North West, Western Cape and Gauteng are expected to take centre stage when President Jacob Zuma meets premiers and mayors in Pretoria today.

The government, ANC and Minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Sicelo Shiceka have been fending off tempers at municipal level, where sporadic protests have emerged.

Zuma will meet all nine premiers and mayors of the country's six metropolitan municipalities at the Presidential Guesthouse to discuss ways of aligning their service delivery efforts with the priorities of the national government.

Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya said Zuma wanted "better service delivery, improved communication between councillors, officials and communities and synergies between the political and administrative sections of municipalities".

He said better synergy between the spheres of government would "create a pool of resources, both human and financial, that would prioritise problem areas".
