Trade activity still negative for July

TRADE conditions improved in July, but the general industry sentiment was negative as has been the case throughout the year.

TRADE conditions improved in July, but the general industry sentiment was negative as has been the case throughout the year.

According to the South African Chamber of Commerce and Industry's survey, the Trade Activity Index peaked at 42 points, but this is still considered negative.

The Trade Expectations index, which measures a six-month outlook, went into positive territory in July for the first time this year at 56.

SACCI chief economist Richard Downing said: "Although there is a more positive outlook for most aspects of trade conditions six months ahead, inflationary expectations rose for the six months as the indices on expected input and sales prices both increased by one and four points respectively." - Zweli Mokgata
