Experts to probe causes of accidents

Experts have been sent to the N1 road between Polokwane and Louis Trichardt because of the rising number of accidents.

The experts from the roads traffic management corporation in Pretoria will evaluate the road and establish the causes of the escalating road accidents.

The decision follows the death of Limpopo MEC for public works Pandelani Ramagoma in a car crash on Monday morning.

The officials were dispatched to the area on Tuesday by the National Department of Roads and Transport.

They will complete their evaluation before the end of next week and hand over their findings to the department for action.

Departmental spokesperson Boiki Tsedu said the experts would suggest measures to curb accidents on the road.

He said the department was disturbed by the number of accidents and wanted to act swiftly to address the situation.

Among the high-profile government officials who have died on the notorious road are acting head of department for local government and housing Mihlothi Hetisane, senior manager in the department of public works Elvis Mavuso and former ambassador to Indonesia Norman Mashabane.

Ramagoma's death comes barely a week after the department conducted a cleansing ceremony with church pastors and senior government officials on the same road.

Concerned residents suggested that traffic lights should be installed at flashpoints, while others appealed for the deployment of more traffic officers.

Meanwhile, the memorial service for t Ramagoma will be held today at Jack Botes. The service starts at 12pm.
