Mayekiso, from Gauteng, is said to have died on Sunday morning after being stabbed. His shoes and a mobile phone are missing.
"Apparently he went to meet a friend in Bloemfontein in the early hours on Sunday," said a distraught Ledwaba, who had just celebrated the achievement of producing his first national champion on Friday last weekend.
That champion is Tshepang Mohale, who won the super middleweight belt from Khotso Motau at the Mangaung Sports Centre. Mayekiso was a gloving steward during last weekend's tournament
"(Blood spots showed that) Mayekiso walked a distance before he collapsed and died. I heard about this on Monday," Ledwaba said. "I left Bloemfontein a happy man. This has spoiled all the excitement. He was due to fight on the 25th."
Palesa Mosiea, who is manager at Robs Promotions, said: "Bongani Dlamini, who shared a flat with Mayekiso, got worried when Mayekiso disappeared with the keys.
"Dlamini and Khiba Mpho, our PRO, looked for him without success. Mpho called me and I advised them to go the police station and state mortuary. Still nothing. They went out again to look for him on Monday. They got to a garage where they asked around. They picked up a newspaper inside the garage and spotted a body covered with something.
"They identified him by his blonde hair and the colour of his jacket. His family was notified about his death by the police (yesterday). Our condolences to his family."
Mayekiso, 32, fought in the flyweight division, in which he chalked up seven wins (2 KOs) against four losses.
