REGISTRATION for the Nedbank SA 10km Championship has already begun and judging by the reaction from the public, it looks like the event is going to be a great success.

The race will take place at the Coetzenburg Athletics Stadium in Stellenbosch on August 29, starting from 8am.

According to Athletics South Africa's general manager Molatelo "Lati" Malehopo, they were still receiving applications from keen members of the public.

"We started the registration process about two months ago.

"The response has not been what we hoped it would be, but we're hopeful that sooner or later things will start looking up."

Malehopo also said that online applications for the race will close on August 21 while the deadline for physical applications is August 24.

"We had some challenges last year, with roads being narrow and all that, but I'm pleased to say all that has been sorted out and we are set to go," Malehopo said.

Last year's winner, Sibusiso Nzima, said he was quite confident that he would repeat the feat.

"Preparations are going well so far, and I'd like to improve on my performance of last year, which was 28 minutes and 52 seconds.

"If I can top that, then I will be satisfied," Nzima said.

Women's champion Lebo Phalula said yesterday: "I'm definitely going to win this race and defend my title.

"Last year I finished at 32 minutes, 54 seconds and I want to improve on that time this year. I have got no injuries and I'm just waiting to get on the track."
