RECENT media reports that convicted fraudster and Durban businessman Schabir Shaik was seen cruising around in his luxury BMW have once again raised questions about his controversial release from jail.

Shaik was released on medical parole in March after serving two years and four months of a 15-year prison term for fraud and corruption.

He was found guilty, among other things, of facilitating a bribe, allegedly paid by French arms company Thint, for then ANC deputy president Jacob Zuma.

His release raised a political stink, with opposition parties wanting to know why his case was treated with such urgency.

The Department of Correctional Services and the parole board must act to the clear up this matter once and for all.

Otherwise it will only fan perceptions that Shaik was given preferential treatment.
