Life would be boring if we all stopped being optimistic about the future and gave up our love for fine cars.
I attended the launch of the face-lifted Mercedes-Benz S-Class range last week.
The new S-Class was launched at Sun City, where the entire range paraded their capabilities.
The new S-Class bears minor body changes and additions, such as daytime driving lights and headlamps.
The launch started in the morning at the Mercedes-Benz South Africa offices in Centurion, Gauteng, and two hours later, we were at Sun City, pleased by what we discovered.
My driving partner and I picked the S500 as our first drive and swapped it for an S63 AMG.
I won't reveal how much I clocked on the S63 AMG because I don't want to be reprimanded by the Department of Transport.
Anyway, the S63 AMG has long proved its mettle.
From the base model S350 to the gogo of them all, the S65 AMG, the S-Class has the best of all worlds.
On entering one is greeted by fine finishes of leather and wood.
There is no doubt that the people who buy this type of vehicle is rewarding themselves for all their hard work.
The high safety standard typical of the S-Class is further improved by a unique combination of new camera- and radar-based driver assistance systems, with innovations such as Attention Assist drowsiness detection and Adaptive Highbeam Assist.
More agility and driving enjoyment is ensured by Direct-Steer and modified Active Body Control with crosswind stabilisation for the eight- and 12-cylinder models.
Also, the new S-Class comes with Lane Keeping Assist and Night View Assist. Splitview technology is a new feature too.
The front screen splits in two when the vehicle is in motion.
This is for the benefit of the front passenger to enjoy watching DVDs or television.
This feature is standard on S600 L and S65 AMG.
"Locally, the S-Class has reigned supreme since its introduction in 2006.
"With a market share of 45,6percent, January 2006 to date, the S-Class dominates the premium upper luxury segment," says Eckart Mayer, divisional manager, Mercedes-Benz Cars.
The S-Class bears small changes in the design. According to Mercedes-Benz SA's Graeme Ingram the current design will stay the same for a long while.
He says that research had proved that this design is loved by most Merc customers.
