Fifteen branch courts were designated as full service courts yesterday, with 75 to follow soon.

The justice ministry said this was part of efforts to give all citizens access to justice.

"Every effort will be made to ensure that all South Africans enjoy equal access to justice without being dictated to by geographical areas."

Branch courts were set up in townships and rural areas and their jurisdiction was mostly confined to criminal matters.

Three of the courts are in Gauteng, six in Northern Cape, two in the Western Cape, and one each in Eastern Cape, Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu-Natal. - Sapa
