Thirty-four days have passed since one of GaRankuwa's top policemen has disappeared
Detective Inspector Bachipile Andrew Rapeta, 49, of Lebanon in Monoplane, north of Pretoria, cracked countless serious cases in his 28 years of service. Colleagues and relatives trying to track his whereabouts have come up empty-handed.
Known as BA to his friends, colleagues and drinking buddies, Rapeta went missing while returning home on July 29.
His wife Sarah and their two children, Ofentse, 21, and Thato, 25, last saw him when he left for work that morning. His colleagues last saw him at about 10pm on the same day.
Two days later Rapeta's metallic blue Nissan Almera was found parked in the bush behind the old traffic department in Zone 15. The car was locked and nothing appeared to be missing.
Rapeta is remembered as a dedicated cop and religious gentleman. He loved quoting from the Bible, say those close to him.
On the day he vanished Rapeta visited Jeff's Place just after 4pm, had two beers and left at 6pm. He went to Philly's Tavern, where he downed two more beers.
He left shortly before 9pm and drove to Malaya Tavern, which is owned by his friend Amon "Malaya" More,
More praised Rapeta as "very talented, hard working and a good person who mixed easily with anyone".
"He frequented my place but never clashed with anyone. People here enjoyed his knowledge of the Bible and took his advice seriously."
More's wife said Rapeta was a "religious darling.
"He always quoted from the Bible and even made jokes about it. At times, we did not take his biblical quotes seriously, thinking he could be drunk. He always kept a Bible in his car."
Inspector Matthew Nkoadi of the Ga-Rankuwa police station said a Bible was found in Rapeta's car with dockets of cases he was investigating.
He also said Rapeta never missed their weekly prayer services on Monday at the station.
Nkoadi said officers had visited every place Rapeta was known to frequent, including local shebeens and friends, as part of their investigation.
He appealed to anyone with information on Rapeta's whereabout to please contact them on either 012-797-8855-00 or Crime Stop on 086-001-0111.
