Makeba gig cancelled

FOR the second time Miriam Makeba fans were left high and dry when the tribute concert, which was to have taken place in her honour on Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newton in Johannesburg yesterday, was cancelled.

FOR the second time Miriam Makeba fans were left high and dry when the tribute concert, which was to have taken place in her honour on Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newton in Johannesburg yesterday, was cancelled.

Last week the communications executive at the department of arts and culture ducked and dived when Sowetan asked for an update on the concert.

Makeba's grandson and spokesperson Lumumba Lee said he supported Arts and Culture Minister Lulu Xingwana's decision to postpone the show.

The minister had felt that the government needed to involve "more protocol", he said.

Lee apologised to fans who turned up for the show and said the concert would most likely be rescheduled for September.

The new date would be announced this week, he said.
