Financial investors are seeking to find hedges against inflation and individuals and corporations are spending time and money collecting in an arena once seen as an eccentric pastime.

Antique dealer Clyde Terry says corporate collectors often are the ones who drive up prices.

Michael Prior of Collectable Books says: "Recent events have shown that if you speculate rather than invest, or if you take the short-term view only, then you wouldn't dream of investing in antiques."
