DA MP David Maynier could be charged for putting the country's national security at risk - if the ANC parliamentary caucus has its way.
Parliament's committee on defence and military veterans meets tomorrow to discuss revelations made by Maynier last week. Maynier accused South Africa's arms control body - the National Conventional Arms Control Committee (NCACC) - of authorising sales to Venezuela, Iran, Libya, Syria, Zimbabwe and North Korea. He claimed that the NCACC last met a year ago, but that arms deals to countries such as Libya, Zimbabwe and Iran had "slipped through" in the meantime.
The ANC hit back, saying it had not yet authorised the sale of weapons to Iran, Syria and Zimbabwe.
Yesterday Mothapo said his caucus would ask Parliament to investigate whether the DA had contravened the National Conventional Arms Control Act 41 of 2002 by disclosing details of arms deals.
Maynier said he would not reveal the source of his information, and accused the ANC of starting a witch-hunt against him. - Anna Majavu
