Clinton urges Angolan poll, flies off to DRC

US SECRETARY of state Hillary Rodham Clinton met Angola's long-time leader yesterday after urging long-awaited presidential elections and good governance in Africa's key oil producer.

Clinton met President Jose Eduardo dos Santos, who marks 30 years in power next month, in the capital Luanda.

Clinton said the Angolan government had been "extremely hospitable" in brief remarks ahead of the meeting, which comes a day after she pressed for the the country to hold its first presidential poll since 1992.

"We're looking forward. I bring greetings from President Obama," she said.

Clinton also called for Angola to do more to spread oil wealth. She flies to the Democratic Republic of Congo immediately after her meeting with Dos Santos. - Sapa-AFP
