THE government's housing programme, the R4,2billion N2 Gateway housing project in Cape Town, was so badly planned that it was doomed to fail from the start.

THE government's housing programme, the R4,2billion N2 Gateway housing project in Cape Town, was so badly planned that it was doomed to fail from the start.

This according to Parliament's standing committee on public accounts (Scopa).

It said yesterday the government officials responsible for the wasteful expenditure should be charged.

Marissa Moore said the cost of each house had ballooned from R96000 a unit to more than R190000 each.

And the walls of many of the units are "vertically and horizontally cracked", Scopa chairperson Themba Godi said.
