IF YOU have always wondered whether people really care about laying out the best funeral for a loved one, you are not alone.

IF YOU have always wondered whether people really care about laying out the best funeral for a loved one, you are not alone.

From next year at least you might just be rewarded for that outstanding send-off.

In a month's time, the first South African Funeral Awards will be launched.

The launch is scheduled for September 19 in Johannesburg.

The awards are aimed at celebrating excellence in the funeral industry, including insurance companies and burial societies.

Zanele Mwale, managing director of the Mwale Group that is hosting the awards, said that her company had been working on the idea since last year.

Though she had conceived the idea, Mwale has linked with the International Funeral Awards (IFA), a European organisation celebrating the funeral service industry.

The IFA awards have been running for more than a decade.

Among the 15 categories in the awards are insurance company of the year, burial society of the year, best funeral suppliers and best newcomer funeral parlour .
