It is alleged that the incident occurred after a cat-fight over a man that ended badly when the 22-year-old suspect poured a flammable liquid over the victim before setting her alight on Tuesday.
Silindile Bhengu, 25, is fighting for her life in hospital with severe burns to her face, chest and hands.
Passers-by saw her lying unconscious near a river bank in Manchester Road .
Police spokesman Hendry Budhram said initial investigations revealed that the victim had run to a nearby stream and managed to douse the flames before collapsing.
