PUPILS at a high school in Limpopo are living in fear of being attacked by knife-wielding hooligans.
The hooligans are targeting the pupils of Charles Mathonsi High School near NkowaNkowa outside Tzaneen when they finish school in the afternoons.
They are allegedly from the nearby Mokgolobotho village.
A group of knife-wielding youths yesterday attacked an 18-year-old male pupil shortly after he left the school's gate.
The pupil, whose name cannot be disclosed to protect the identity of his family, was on his way home.
The incident took place about 100 meters away from the school, and the security guards at the school did not notice anything.
The pupil was admitted to a local hospital for treatment after he was stabbed several times in the chest and head.
Ritavi police spokesperson Inspector Seth Magadzi said they had opened a case of attempted murder.
He appealed to residents to help them with information that could lead to the arrest of the attackers.
Magadzi said it was still unclear as to what led to the boy's attack as the incident happened outside the school premises.
The attackers disappeared shortly after the incident, he said.
Magadzi said they believed the group was the same one that had been terrorising communities in the Mokgolobotho area for years.
"We are concerned about the incident and would like communities to help us in making sure the suspects are brought to book in order for us to build a crime-free society," he said.
Meanwhile, parents of pupils at the school said they had been worried about the security of their children for some time now.
They accused the principal of failing to employ more security personnel as a back up in case the situation got out of hand at the school.
Education department spokesperson Ndo Mangala said he was aware of the incident.
He said the department was waiting for a report from the circuit office before it could decide on what measures to take to step up security at the school.
