MPUMALANGA will today honour women who have made a sterling contribution to emancipation .
The awards specifically focus on agricultural achievements.
Agriculture MEC Mishack Malinga will, as part of Women's Month celebrations, host female farmers of the year.
The event, which started in 1999, is meant to recognise improved delivery, innovation and excellence in agriculture. Its objective is to empower women in agriculture by recognising their contribution in the fight against poverty.
"Members of the public were invited on June 30 this year to nominate a farmer or farmers for the competition in various categories," department spokesperson Zanele Shabangu said yesterday.
She said the categories were: top producer for export markets, top producer for national markets and top producer for informal markets. The others were: top producer for household consumption (communal garden) and top producer for household consumption (backyard garden).
The winner in each category will walk away with R40000.
The second prize is R20000 and R10000 for third prize.
The event will take place in Middelburg today.
Thandaza Nkosi was last year's winner.
