LIMPOPO education MEC Namane Masemola says he will take it upon himself to ensure that every child was registered at schools for the 2010 academic year, including first-time admissions.
"The department has a constitutional obligation to make sure that all children get access to education," Masemola said yesterday.
He said the South African Schools Act (Sasa) required ordinary public schools to admit pupils without discriminating against them in any way.
"If a child is going to school for the first time or moving to a new school, registration forms from the school nearest to the parents' home or work address must be collected from the beginning of August 2009," Masemola said.
The forms must be returned to the school by September 22.
"It is advisable to return the forms within a day or two as admissions will be treated on a first come, first served basis, assuming all other criteria have been met."
He said parents would be informed on October 22 whether their children had been admitted.
In terms of Sasa, children entering Grade One can only be registered if they are five, turning six on or before June 30 2010.
Those who are four and turning five on or before June 30 2010 must be admitted to Grade R.
"This is part of our campaign to register 110000 Grade R learners," he said.
