A hawker was shot dead and more than 10 injured during a fight with the police in the Thohoyandou city centre yesterday.

It is believed that the hawkers were resisting evictions.

The hawkers reacted furiously and started trashing the streets by overturning rubbish bins all over the streets in the town.

The Thulamela municipality allegedly ordered hawkers to vacate their stalls in the parking area to make way for other businesses.

Police opened fire, injuring several hawkers . Some shops closed early for fear of looting .

Captain Mashudu Malelo yesterday refused to comment .

Municipal spokesperson Nndwamato Tshiila said the hawkers were evicted because some of them operated without licences.
