LIMPOPO MEC for education Dickson Masemola says plans are under way to address illiteracy among youths who failed Grades 10 and 12.

Masemola, pictured, who was addressing the media in Polokwane yesterday, said the department was planning to make use of Further Education and Training colleges to train the youths.

"Plans are under way to use Further Education and Training colleges as multipurpose centres to give these youths a second chance to complete their studies," Masemola said.

He said studies showed that a large number of youths dropped out of school before reaching Grade 12, which contributed to illiteracy.

He said the department also planned to appoint 300 principals to schools around the province to fill vacant positions.

According to Masemola the department was looking to attract managers who were actively and earnestly interested in developing education in the province.

He warned school governing bodies to appoint managers and principals who would respond to challenges faced by the education sector.
