Healthcare gets better

THE operating hours at Gauteng clinics have been extended in an effort to improve health services.

THE operating hours at Gauteng clinics have been extended in an effort to improve health services.

Health MEC Qedani Mahlangu said clinics that work extended hours will be increased from 56 to 72 and community health centres operating on a 24-hour basis will increase from 17 to 20.

"We will also reduce waiting times at clinics by issuing medication stock for three months to stable chronic patients," Mahlangu said, tabling her R16,58billion budget yesterday in the Gauteng legislature.

She also announced that they had terminated their contract with the 3P Consultants.

The company was given a three-year, R273million contract to enhance technical ability and skills.

Consultants, lawyers and technical experts have since worked in the department at rates ranging from R300 to R1700 an hour.

Mahlangu also said the department would turn around service delivery at 10 hospitals, including Chris Hani-Baragwanath and Tambo Memorial Hospitals, in the next two years.

"Towards the end of August, as part of our commitment to building partnerships, we will host an imbizo for nurses, where we will deliberate on, among other things, measures we will take to reintroduce the caring ethos that historically nurses have been admired for."
