Australia tourney boost for Emerging Players

CORRIE van Zyl, Cricket South Africa's coach at the High Performance centre in Pretoria, returned home at the weekend from the quadrangular tournament in Australia, happy that his Emerging Player squad had put good building blocks in place for the development of future Proteas players.

CORRIE van Zyl, Cricket South Africa's coach at the High Performance centre in Pretoria, returned home at the weekend from the quadrangular tournament in Australia, happy that his Emerging Player squad had put good building blocks in place for the development of future Proteas players.

"Obviously it would have been nice to have won the final (they lost by 17 runs to India) but it was not to be, and if somebody had told me before the tournament that we would win eight out of nine matches I would certainly have taken it," he said.

"If you are going to go there to win and not to learn, then you are not going to achieve anything.

"This tour was an opportunity to grow as a team and to get a taste of international cricket, of touring and all the associated experiences that go with it. In that sense it was a huge success."

Van Zyl praised the batting of Heino Kuhn and Ferhaan Behardien - who both scored centuries - and the bowling of CJ de Villiers and Thandi Tshabalala.

Another positive was Lonwabo Tsotsobe's successful comeback from a long-term injury. - Sapa
