TEL AVIV - Six people have been arrested in Israel in connection with a major tax scam in the US, police said yesterday.

The suspects, who live in both the US and Israel, allegedly stole the identities of inmates in US prisons and used them to file fraudulent claims for income tax refunds. The money was then transferred to Israel in an operation allegedly masterminded by an American who also holds Israeli nationality.

The suspects "extorted millions of dollars from retired Jews living in the US by telling them they had won the Israeli national lottery". - Sapa-AFP
