EIGHTEEN people including two children have been killed in head-on collisions in the North West and Free State over the weekend.

EIGHTEEN people including two children have been killed in head-on collisions in the North West and Free State over the weekend.

In the North West, the accident took place on the road between Vryburg and Ganye-sa on Friday night.

North West police spokes-person Captain Adele Myburgh said eight people died on impact while the ninth died on arrival at the Vryburg hospital.

The two bakkies, a Nissan and an Isuzu collided at about 10.30pm about 36km from Vryburg.

Myburgh said the Nissan bakkie travelling in the direction of Vryburg allegedly over took two vehicles before colliding head-on with an on coming Isuzu bakkie. Five occupants of the Nissan bakkie including two children were killed instantly.

Myburgh also said that two males and a female, who were travelling in the Isuzu from Morokweng village, were also killed. A male passenger died on arrival at hospital while two others were admitted for treatment.

In the Free State, police said nine people were killed in another head-on collision on the Petrusburg Road near Bloemfontein on Saturday night.

Two sedans collided head-on. One was travelling to Bloemfontein while another, with seven passengers, was travelling to Petrusburg.

All passengers, including the drivers died on the scene.

Meanwhile in Johannesburg, ER24 paramedics responded to various accident scenes.

Two vehicle collied in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg yesterday morning. One person died and eight others were critically injured.

On Saturday morning a Land Rover and a truck collided head on.

A man, believed to be in his early 30's was trapped behind the steering wheel of his Land Rover. He sustained multiple injuries and possible serious head injuries, ER24 paramedics said.

In Potchefstroom, North West, a five-day-old baby had to be rescued from a burning house when a gas heater caught fire. Fire fighters found the baby with his family trapped inside. The baby was treated for smoke inhalation.
