In its latest attempt it has introduced three new vaccines that are expected to significantly reduce mortality and illnesses in children.
The vaccines are Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine - 7 valent (PCV7), Rotavirus and Pentavalent Vaccine (DTaP-IPV/Hib).
They will be available in all public health facilities throughout the country from tomorrow as part of the Expanded Programme of Immunisation.
The PCV7 protects against severe life threatening diseases caused by a bacterium streptococcus pneumonia, also known as pneumococcus.
The rotavirus vaccine will help prevent severe forms of diarrhoea that could lead to death. Pentavalent, a combination vaccine with five components, will protect against diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, haemophilus influenza and polio.
"The introduction of these vaccines is expected to reduce child illnesses and deaths in the country and also assist in meeting the millennium development goals relating to infant and child mortality in 2015," said department spokesperson Fidel Habe
