The ANC's provincial branch said Cele would be replaced by local government and traditional affairs MEC Willies Mchunu.
The party's deputy provincial secretary Nomusa Dube would take over from Mchunu.
The KwaZulu-Natal ANC believed Cele was the "right choice" to replace Jackie Selebi as national police commissioner.
The party said it had done "sterling work" at a provincial level, it said.
"He understands the crime challenges facing South Africa after his tenure as MEC for safety and community liaison in the province," the ANC said.
"He is also brave enough to tackle crime head on because he is never front line of danger."
The party said Cele had been instrumental in "uprooting crime" in the province and had been "non-tolerant of lazy and inefficient police".
It said opposition parties had made "outrageous statements in the wake of Cele's appointment.
"We have noted the outrageous statements by the opposition parties on the appointment of Bheki Cele and the allegations by the media that Bheki Cele was waving a gun in Nongoma during an ANC rally.
"The Congress of the People said it did not trust Cele to be impartial, did not approve of his "abrasive" manner and charged that, during recent violence in KwaZulu-Natal, he "never attempted to ensure neutrality of the SAPS in policing the area".
