OUPA Magashula, who has been acting tax commissioner since the elevation of Pravin Gordhan to minister of finance, was officially confirmed as his successor yesterday.

The new commissioner of the SA Revenue Service, pictured, was first trained as an oceanographer and chemist at the University of Cape Town.

He has since worked for companies such as Nampak, Sun International and Anglo Vaal Industries, both in operations and human resources. Before joining Sars in 2006 he was director of human resources at Telkom.

"A new era has begun at Sars, with a new leadership," Sars spokesperson Adrian Lackay said. "We look forward to tackling all the challenges with the new commissioner."

Magashula, whose appointment was announced at a Cabinet meeting this week, had, according to Minister in the Presidency Collins Chabane, served as chief officer for corporate services at Sars. He was one of three deputy commissioners at Sars. - Staff Reporter and I-Net Bridge
