CRICKET South Africa yesterday left the door open for a return to the Wanderers Stadium when England tour later this year.

CRICKET South Africa yesterday left the door open for a return to the Wanderers Stadium when England tour later this year.

After an urgent board meeting to consider a dispute with the Gauteng Cricket Board, which led to CSA withdrawing international matches from the stadium, the national body issued a statement strongly criticising the GCB - but pledging a commitment to staging matches at the Wanderers.

The return to the Wanderers was dependent on Gauteng apologising for accusations made about CSA and its chief executive Gerald Majola.

Gauteng must also set out its terms for staging international matches. After the row blew up earlier this month, CSA announced that three England matches - a Twenty20 international, a one-day international and the fourth Test - would be switched to other venues.

This led to the England and Wales Cricket Board seeking clarity from CSA in view of the large number of English supporters who had already made plans to visit South Africa.

Yesterday's statement criticised Gauteng for writing directly to the ECB "in breach of national and international protocols".

Gauteng chairperson Barry Skjoldhammer said he had not yet studied the CSA statement but said he welcomed the suggestion that matches might yet be played at the Wanderers. - AFP
