Wits sign Zim player of the year

ONE of the ambitions of Bidvest Wits this season is to win silverware in the Absa Premiership and, if possible, the championship. With the signing of top Zimbabwean striker Evan Chikwaikwai, who scored 23 goals for his former team Njube Sundowns last year, their target looks attainable.

He was the top goal-scorer in the Zimbabwean Premier League and his virtuoso performance won him that country's soccer star of the year award.

Chikwaikwai was one of the 10 new players unveiled by the Clever Boys at Milpark Stadium yesterday.

After signing a two-year deal, he said: "It is a dream come true to play for one of the best sides in SA. I will add impetus to the team. I'm also looking forward to winning the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot Award at the end of the season."

Other players unveiled included Mark Haskins (from Moroka Swallows), Sipho Mngomezulu (Maritzburg United), Michael Morton (Orlando Pirates), N'da Jacques Yoboue (FC AK), Gustavo Pedroso Zamaio (Bandeirantes FC, Sao Paulo) and Michael Rodriques (a South African who played college football in Brazil). Three youngsters - Castro Mabope, Sibusiso Vilakazi and Brandon Barkhuzen - were promoted from the team's development side.

Coach Roger de Sa was satisfied with the signings.
