Semenya chases double gold at CAA

CASTER Semenya, South Africa's 18-year-old middle-distance running prospect, will chase two gold medals in the CAA African Junior Championships in Mauritius while fine-tuning herself for the IAAF World Championships in Berlin next month.

CASTER Semenya, South Africa's 18-year-old middle-distance running prospect, will chase two gold medals in the CAA African Junior Championships in Mauritius while fine-tuning herself for the IAAF World Championships in Berlin next month.

The South African team of 27 men and eight women left on Tuesday to take part in the African Junior Championships from July 30 to August 2 in Mauritius.

Semenya became the fourth fastest woman in the 800m this season with a time of 2:00,58. Her next goal will be to break the two-minute barrier.

Much is also expected from Tazmin Britz, former gold medallist at the IAAF World Youth Championships, in the javelin event, Cheyne Rahme (pole vault), Boipelo Motlhatlhego (triple jump) and Luvo Manyonga (long jump).

On the track Cornel Fredericks in the 110m and 400m hurdle events, sprinters Waide Jooste, Ethan Floris, Brent Stevens and Rorisang Rammonye in the 400m will be hunting the medals.
