Murder accused in bail row

A SECURITY guard charged with murder in an apparent racial attack has been ordered to produce the police receipt for his bail after allegations that he was released from police cells with "undue haste".

A SECURITY guard charged with murder in an apparent racial attack has been ordered to produce the police receipt for his bail after allegations that he was released from police cells with "undue haste".

No record of Marius van Niekerk's bail in the police docket was found when he appeared in the Bloemfontein magistrates' court this week.

Van Niekerk, a security guard at the Warrior Pub and Grill in Bloemfontein, has been charged with the murder of Sdeku Wotshela. The deceased was allegedly attacked by a group of white men at the pub near the showgrounds on June 10.

The security guard was released within 24 hours of his arrest on R500 bail under circumstances that infuriated Wotshela's family.

The court wants to establish how Van Niekerk was granted bail before he appeared before a magistrate. He was ordered to produce the receipt for his bail when he next appears before magistrate Piet Bester on August 27.

Wotshela, a training manager for Metcash at the Trade Centre in Bloemfontein, was on a business outing with a client and colleagues when he was attacked. He died on the spot.

The national prosecuting authority said Van Niekerk was released after an agreement between the prosecutor, investigating officer and his lawyers.

Superintendent Annel Wrench said the police would investigate how Van Niekerk got bail before his record had been checked.
