We took Julius Malema to court after we had exhausted all possible avenues to resolve this matter without going to the equality court, but we failed.
All we wanted from Malema was sincere contrition and we would have settled out of court.
We are still committed to reaching an amicable solution.
What are the facts? We view the statements he made about women who have been raped in a very serious light since they create an environment that is not conducive to stopping rape in our country.
Rape remains a national crisis and the recent findings of the Medical Research Council attest to this fact. It is a sad reality that one in every four men in our country have conceded to have raped.
This should spur all of us on to double our efforts to stop this scourge. It is men in leadership positions, such as Malema, who we call on to be exemplary if we are to deal decisively with patriarchy and its attendant debilitating effects on our society.
It is our grandmothers, mothers, sisters and daughters who continue to be violated sexually on a daily basis and we cannot afford the luxury of keeping quiet.
I hope Chumile will join our efforts in ensuring that we create a society that respects women as human beings with inalienable rights. The struggle against rape continues.
