POLICE yesterday fired rubber bullets at about 200 protesters who stoned cars and blockaded streets as they tried to voice their complaints over service delivery.

POLICE yesterday fired rubber bullets at about 200 protesters who stoned cars and blockaded streets as they tried to voice their complaints over service delivery.

Police spokesperson Captain Godfrey Maditsi said the protesters marched to Thokoza municipality in the East Rand at about 8.30am, but found the offices locked as municipal workers were on strike.

They then started pelting police cars with stones and blockaded the streets.

"They became disorderly and started causing havoc. They also wanted to hijack taxis to get free rides," Maditsi said.

"We then fired rubber bullets to disperse them."

Maditsi said many rioters ran for their lives as soon as they saw more police reinforcements.

He said, however, that no injuries were reported.

No one has been arrested for the mayhem and police are investigating.

Although the situation was still tense by late yesterday afternoon, roads had been opened and the protest appeared over.

Thokoza has been one of the hotspots of violent rioting as South Africa experiences a series of service delivery protests. - Sapa
