Jill Scott fluent as a Motswana

FROM Monday, South Africans will see American R&B singer and composer Jill Scott as a convincing Motswana woman in the local drama series, No1 Detectives Agency.

FROM Monday, South Africans will see American R&B singer and composer Jill Scott as a convincing Motswana woman in the local drama series, No1 Detectives Agency.

The singer will shame many South Africans who cannot utter a single word in Setswana.

M-Net producers of the show say Scott speaks fluent Setswana in the drama. This, they say, has been achieved through the help of dialogue coaches.

The singer is said to be convincing.

Scott plays the character of Precious Ramotswe, a traditionalist both in her adherence to the old Batswana moral values and in her traditional build.

Created by Alexander McCall Smith, the drama series features local actors such as Tumisho Masha, John Kani, Brenda Ngxoli, Desmond Dube, Kenneth Nkosi and Keketso Semoko among others.

Home Affairs star Ngxoli told Sowetan that her role as a helper in the drama series is lighter than the previous ones.

"My character is funny and I enjoyed playing it.

"But it has its own challenges because I don't naturally speak Setswana.

"I had to do research to understand the role and the culture of Batswana."

Ngxoli said working with a team of experienced and talented actors had helped her grow as an actor.

"Working with international actors was quite an experience and I had to double my efforts.

"Jill is an exciting character and does not regard herself as a star."
