A MINEWORKER died after a rockfall at Harmony Gold's Evander 2 Shaft in Mpumalanga, the company said yesterday.

The accident occurred on Friday.

A second mineworker was injured in the rockfall, the company said.

"Management, together with the Department of Mineral Resources, commenced investigations on Friday," Harmony said.

It sad that Evander in particular had had an excellent safety record, with Evander 8 Shaft recently achieving two million fatality-free shifts.

Harmony said Evander 2 and 5 shafts had been awarded the Safety Achievement Flag in the category of deep level platinum and gold mining by the Mine Health and Safety Council in April this year.

Harmony's CEO Graham Briggs said management continued to look at all areas to ensure safety improvements were sustainable by improving the safety systems.

"Harmony management is committed to change the culture and behaviour of all ouremployees and to achieve the aspirations set by each of the operations. It's tragic that this fatality occurred," he said. - Sapa
