NAIROBI - At least 21 people were killed and 53 injured when two buses collided early yesterday near a trading post in Kenya's Rift Valley region.

Rift Valley police chief Francis Munyambu described the disaster as "one of the worst accidents in this region in recent times.

"The scene was littered with body parts because most people were thrown out of the vehicles on impact before one of the buses landed on them," another officer said.

Kenya records more than 13000 traffic accidents yearly, 85 percent of that are due to human error and the rest due to poor roads and vehicles. An average of 2600 people are killed and 11000 injured every year, according to government statistics. - Sapa-AFP
