MINISTER of Communications Siphiwe Nyanda said the migration of free-to-air TV from analogue to digital was well on its way.

MINISTER of Communications Siphiwe Nyanda said the migration of free-to-air TV from analogue to digital was well on its way.

He was speaking at the launch of Digital Dzonga, the 14-member advisory council made up of representatives from various spheres of government, labour and the private sector (broadcasters and technology manufacturers).

Dzonga is to oversee the migration process which launched in November 2008 when Sentech switched on its digital signal for its trial phase.

"I understand that the South African Bureau of Standards has released the set-top-box specification, which is a positive development."

Lara Kantor, chairperson of Dzonga, said all the broadcasters involved in the process (SABC, M-Net and e-tv) "would be ready with a consumer offering" between January and June 2010. - Zweli Mokgata
