new pLAYERs, new pARTNERS

JOMO COSMOS are going to be the surprise package of the Premier Soccer League this season and aim to shock a lot of people.

JOMO COSMOS are going to be the surprise package of the Premier Soccer League this season and aim to shock a lot of people.

These were the words of owner-coach Jomo Sono, at a function to introduce two new marketing partners and 12 new players at the refurbished Rand Stadium in Turffontein yesterday.

Ezenkosi's new partners are the Media Connection, which brings along 65 community radio stations claiming access to some 6,2million listeners countrywide and Best Assist, a financial services company.

The new players, introduced by team manager Andrew "Jaws of Life" Rabutla, are Gerald Modabi, Themba Maringa (both from Dynamos), Felix Badenhorst (Manzini Wanderers), Christian Ombola (Winners Park), Mfanafuthi Bhembe (Mbabane Swallows), Asanda Mvalo (Bay United), Katlego Loke (Thanda Royal Zulu), Tornado Mongale (FC AK), Mpendulo Kunene (Mbabane Highlanders), Koena Mathopa (Santos), Tshepo Tomanyane (Carara Kicks), and Elhadji Abdou Samb (Senegal).

There was no mention of any players leaving or being put on transfer.

Sono paid tribute to the players that stuck with the club after it was relegated.

"I appreciate the loyalty of players who stayed on after we went down. They showed it was not all about money as with the (Cristiano) Ronaldo issue. We are now back in the Premiership and have engaged new players who we are happy with," Sono said.

"We have a vital first game against Platinum Stars and as with any first date we must make sure we win to get off to a good start. Our aim is to make sure we compete this season and, with God's help, hope we will never be relegated again."

On the partnerships, senior player Lucky Mhlathe said: "Rights have been granted at no cost to the community radio stations to cover all Cosmos's home games at the Rand Stadium.

"In return, the radio stations will grant one hour airtime per day for two days a week to the club to do a talk show featuring Sono and other club officials.

"This will be followed by a phone-in programme where listeners and fans will have the opportunity to discuss soccer and the club itself. This is a first in the country and it's aimed at empowering the communities and radio stations involved."
