ThE family of a municipal manager who lost two wives in a shooting spree is unable to come to terms with what happened.

Both wives died when the younger one, police Constable Agreement Mathebula, 31, shot and killed the first wife, Mildred Nyathi, 42, before turning the gun on herself.

Nyathi's daughter and a domestic worker were seriously wounded.

Husband Sipho Mlambo is the manager of the Hluvukani regional offices of the Bushbuckridge municipality.

His junior wife used her service pistol in the shooting and also torched her husband's house before turning the gun on herself last Friday. The incident happened at Athol village near the Manyeleti game reserve at about 4pm.

Mathebula was attached to the Mpumalanga police provincial security services.

Mpumalanga police said Mathebula shot and killed the first wife, Nyathi, and her 19-year-old daughter, Clarence Mlambo.

However yesterday, Mlambo's uncle Stanley Mlambo insisted that the daughter did not die as police had reported. He was among those busy with funeral arrangements for the victims.

"Our girl was so critically wounded that everyone was convinced that she had died.

"We are concerned that police could make such mistakes, we heard some of them speaking on radio stations saying she had died," he said.

"I want to put it on record that she is alive, critically injured and in hospital."

Nyathi's funeral is scheduled for Saturday while Mathebula will be buried on Sunday at her home village in Clara.

Neighbour Sibongile Silinda yesterday related how she and Nyathi were sitting behind the house when they heard a sound that "seemed like a bomb" coming from the house.

"I jumped the fence into my yard but my neighbour decided to go into the house to investigate.

"I was too frightened to do anything and I hid behind curtains but the loud sound continued.

"Before I understood what was happening I saw my neighbour's house on fire and became more confused," she said.

Mathebula allegedly also shot domestic worker, Orters Nkuna, 42.
