"Sadly, we are now in a position to confirm that all nine employees trapped by the rockfall were fatally injured and have been recovered from the shaft complex," the company said yesterday.
It was at presen informing their families in consultation with the National Union of Mine Workers. The workers were killed on Monday in one of the mechanised panels at 14 Shaft.
"We have set aside Friday July 24 2009 as a day of mourning across our operations," the company said.
Earlier, Minister of Mineral Resources Susan Shabangu expressed shock and deep regret at the deaths and conveyed her condolences to the families. - Sapa
