TWO men who allegedly robbed and assaulted two security guards at the Methodist Church housing refugees in central Johannesburg were arrested yesterday, police said.

TWO men who allegedly robbed and assaulted two security guards at the Methodist Church housing refugees in central Johannesburg were arrested yesterday, police said.

The Zimbabwean men allegedly robbed two guards who intervened when one of them was assaulting a woman staying in the church on the corner of Pritchard and Smal streets in Johannesburg.

"While trying to calm him [the suspect] down, his friend joined in and assaulted the security guards. One of the security guards was robbed of R1500 cash," said Inspector Xoli Mbele.

One of the guards was allegedly assaulted with a beer bottle, while his colleague was struck with an unknown object.

"Both victims were taken to hospital for treatment," Mbele said.

The two suspects will appear in the Johannesburg magistrate's court soon to face charges of common robbery and assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm, added Mbele. - Sapa
