Seshego police have appealed for information that could lead to their arrest. The incident happened on Saturday night at Makgodu village outside Polokwane.
The couple was allegedly walking home from a tavern at about 10pm when they realised they were being followed by four men.
When they reached home the men produced knives and started to assault the couple.
Serious condition
The men took turns raping the woman and later used one of the knives to cut off the man's scrotal sacks and penis. They fled on foot.
Seshego police spokesperson Sergeant Mothemane Malefo said the men allegedly poured tomato sauce and salt into the woman's private parts after raping her.
"The 29-year-old woman was treated and discharged from Seshego Hospital, while her husband was transferred to Polokwane Hospital because of the seriousness of his condition," said Malefo.
He said the men took two cellphones, clothes and R800 from the victims.
