A 25-YEAR-OLD woman who lied about being raped but later pleaded guilty to perjury has been jailed for three years.

In October last year, Jacqueline Mashaba claimed that Rexon Mandela, had raped her while she was visiting her uncle, his landlord. Mandela was arrested and charged with rape. He spent eight months in jail after being denied bail.

But the Atteridgeville magistrate's court heard last Thursday that Mashaba had consensual sex with Mandela.

Mashaba accused Mandela of rape when her uncle heard screams from her room.

He demanded to be let in, but Mandela refused and the uncle summoned the police.

When the police arrived Mashaba accused Mandela of raping her and he was arrested.

Magistrate Pierre Laurens said she had caused Mandela immeasurable shame by falsely accusing him of rape.

"You should be ashamed of yourself and the only sentence I can think of for you is a jail term. I sentence you to three years in prison," he said.
