METRORAIL management and the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union have tried to avert a national strike by calling for an urgent meeting this week.

It was unclear when the meeting would take place but Satawu national sector coordinator Lubebalo Tinzi said yesterday the employers were expected to table a "clear proposal".

He said if no agreement was reached at the meeting the union would embark on mass action. Tinzi said the union and Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa met on Thursday and employers had given an undertaking to "chart a way forward".

" The employer identified a number of problems with the 12,5 percent pay hike the workers wanted."

Tinzi said the union was prepared to canvass members to accept an offer of 7percent. - Sapa
